The great whale emerges from the deep…

I wanted to strike a mythical tone with this one - as if it were the picture cunjured up after overhearing a sailer's strange tale in some firelit tavern.

A print of an original pen and ink illustration which was then painted digitally.

With Leviathan Strikes, ~matt-brown has managed to portray a beast that looks, paradoxically, both menacing and friendly at once!! That, coupled with muted colors and a storybook style that is also reminiscent of wood-cut work, makes this illustration a charming and captivating piece of art. one of my favorite compositions of yours so far! i like this illustration very much, especially the rough, scratchy skin textures on the whale.

i love the lines, textures and colour choice, and the way the whale dominates the page. there is also something about the way you have drawn cresting waves that keeps my eye lingering
